 Pandora's Box

I also did some work on Greek legends. We read the story of Pandora’s Box, the tale of how Pandora unleashed all the problems into the world, with only Hope as the saving grace for all mankind.

The poems were very simple; we gave each of the troubles a physical appearance – the fists of War, the eyes of Loneliness – and used appropriate adjectives to describe these, for example, ‘the swollen belly of Hunger’. We also capitalised the troubles in order to personify them further. The children’s efforts proved very effective, as seen below.

When Pandora stupidly opened the chest

She released all Mankind’s troubles:

The deafening guns of War

The dry throat of Hunger

The twisted mind of Madness

The wrinkly skin of Old Age

The tired eyes of Loneliness

The evil eyes of Crime

The sly look of Jealousy

The frozen body of Death

But there is still Hope!

When Pandora opened the chest she released

The fearless brutes of War

The empty, rumbling stomach of Hunger

The grinding teeth of Madness

The bloody spit of Disease

The evil hands of Spit

The jealous heart of greed

The sore bruises of Slavery

The sharpened scytheof Death

But there was still the shining light of Hope!

When she opened the beautiful chest, out swarmed

The raging screams of War

The red spots of Disease

The rolling eyes of Madness

The hunched back of Old Age

The dry lips of Thirst

The evil hands of Spite

The strange darkness of Murder

The bloodstained hands of Death

But there is still Hope in the world!

When the brainless bubblehead opened the box

She unleashed:

The heaving lungs of Disease

The terrible name-calling of Racism

The evil laugh of Madness

The grey hair of Old Age

The empty eyes of Loneliness

The thumping hands of Cruelty

The bright angel of Death

But Hope still lives among us!

When Pandora risked opening the box

She released all Mankind’s fears:

The shell-shocked eyes of War

The painful wounds of Spite

The terrible wrinkled skin of Old Age

The rumbling belly of Hunger

The nasty grin of Jealousy

The last touch of Death

But there was still Hope!

When the stupid lady lifted the lid

She released Mankind’s greatest fears

The rotting bones of Old Age

The crazed mind of Madness

The wasted bones of War

The aching teeth of Pain

The rumbling stomach of Hunger

The wicked mind of Jealousy

The cold hands of Death

But there was still Hope!

When the foolish girl opened the chest

All Mankind’s problems rushed out:

The parched throat of Thirst

The inactive stare of Old Age

The green eyes of Jealousy

The killing cough of Disease

The cold tears of Loneliness

The driven brain of Madness

The deadly kiss of Death

But there was still white-winged Hope!
