I used the old Welsh folk tale, Gwion and the witch in two of the classes. It tells of hoe the great Welsh bard, Taliesyn came into being, and of how he had the power to transform his shape. In one of the classes we used this idea to send him through time and attend historical events. Pupils made suggestions which I grouped: |
Once he was a red-cloaked girl walking through a wood. When he was a matchbox, a little girl tried to sell him, but sadly she died. As a goal kicker, he helped Wales win The Six nations in 2007. He was an iceberg that sank a ship on her first voyage. He was ashamed of being a poisoned apple used to poison a young girl. As a little boy his nose grew when he told lies. Long ago he was a French leader who lost a battle at Waterloo.

Taliesyn was a ray from the sun on the first morning ever. He remembered being an outlaw in Sherwood Forest. A queen wore him as a robe when she tried to kill her stepdaughter. He was proud of being a speech made by a famous black man in Atlanta the night he died. He was proud of being a donkey that carried a pregnant woman. A few centuries ago he was a quill that wrote a play about two young lovers who died. He regretted being a sword that killed a great dog.

Once Taliesyn was a basket carried through a wood. He was the first rocket to land on the moon. In New York, he was a giant ape that climbed a tall building. A woodcutter used him to chop off a wolf’s head and save a girl and her grandmother. He once flew on a broom and played quidditch. One day he was a plane that crashed into a tall tower.

He was a famous Brazilian footballer who played in America. He was a plan to blow up the Houses of Parliament. As a cruel king, he had some of his wives executed. A wicked queen used him when he was a red apple, to kill a girl. He was a dwarf who lived with a girl called Snow White. In a farmer’s field, he was a scarecrow.. Long, long ago he was a spark from the first fire. In the Bible, he was a jawbone used by a strong man.

He remembered being Mars, the Roman god of war. He was a moustached German who tried to conquer the world but instead shot himself, at the beginning of time he was a horrible snake that made a man and woman eat bad fruit. He was a scar on the forehead of an important young wizard. A prince used him to stab a dog when he was a knife. He lived with seven dwarfs in a wood and he was a little girl with a red hood. In a Roald Dahl book he was a little girl who loved reading.
