Tattybogle

In one of the Y3/4 classes were read the story of ‘Tattybogle’, the scarecrow.

We read the story, omitting the predictable words for the children to insert e.g., ‘he had been there for a long, long  . . .‘.

I asked the children to choose and justify their choice of a favourite page of the book.

Then I took on the role of the scarecrow in a hot-seating exercise. I encouraged open-ended questions such as, 'Which is your favourite season?' 'Would you rather be a scarecrow or a tree?' etc.

Then we used the structure ‘...but Tattybogle just stood there’. to develop sentences. This was initially an oral, whole-class activity. Then we put the children in groups to produce a piece of text.

See the examples below:

A dog barked loudly, but Tattybogle just stood there.

The mouse ran up his trouser leg, but Tattybogle just stood there.
