| YCA - Swansea Primary Headteachers Association SCCASH - Swansea Secondary Headteachers Association Thursday 11th February 2010 To: the Parents/Carers of all children in schools in the City & County of Swansea Dear Parent/Carer, As Headteachers we are writing to all parents/carers of children in our schools to draw their attention to our serious concerns about funding for education in Swansea. For many reasons, your child's school is facing a substantial reduction in funding in 2010/11, and probably for future years after that. We are very concerned that this will have an immediate impact on your child's education in a number of ways: · Class sizes will undoubtedly rise substantially. · There will be many more mixed-age classes, even across phases (e.g. mixed infant and junior classes). · Some curriculum activities may have to be cancelled (e.g. music). · Support for children with additional learning needs could be curtailed. · Redundancies will affect school staffing levels. · Such substantial funding cuts will have a significant impact on the quality of teaching and learning in your child's school. We would not be writing to parents/carers unless we genuinely believed that some or all of these things might happen, and that it would have a serious, detrimental impact on your child's education. What are we doing about it? · At all levels, we have made it clear to the local council and Welsh Assembly Government that schools in Swansea are facing financial pressures that mean that what we do will be seriously affected. What can you do? · Let your local councillor know how you feel about this issue. · Ask your Assembly Member what can be done to support Swansea schools and your child's education. On behalf of all Swansea Headteachers |
